Impending Threat in the United States
Health officials warn that the Zika virus will likely spread in the U.S. this summer. Although nearly 500 cases of Zika virus have been reported in the United States as of May 24, 2016, none of the victims were exposed to the virus in America – they contracted the disease overseas before traveling to the U.S.
The expected Zika threat here in the U.S. coincides with the onset of the summer mosquito season when people are more likely to be bitten by the disease-carrying insects.
Zika Prevention Tips
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CD) recommends you follow these steps to prevent contracting the Zika virus:
- When you’re outside, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants
- Remain in air conditioning
- Use windows and door screens to keep mosquitoes out
- If you sleep outside, protect your bed with a mosquito net
- Use mosquito repellants registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
About the Zika Virus
Zika is spread by mosquito bites and can be transmitted via sexual intercourse and blood transfusion. Mosquitoes that bite infected people can carry the virus.
According to the CDC, most people with the Zika virus have no symptoms; in most cases the disease is mild. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or red eyes. The symptoms generally last between a few days and one week. If you have any of these symptoms, see a physician, especially if you are pregnant. Doctors recommend that those suffering from Zika get plenty of bed rest and drink lots of fluids.
According to the World Health Organization, scientists believe that the Zika virus can cause microcephaly (a birth defect) and Guillain-Barre syndrome (a neurological disorder).
